Pen Plotted Abstraction

Working primarily with pen plotter art machines, I create physical prints from digital files drafted with CAD software.

About

Many artists who utilize pen plotters and art machines in general find their way to them via programming and other generative art disciplines. My designs begin in CAD (drafting software), where I draw up my designs and assign layer properties. This is the software I am most familiar with due to my educational and professional background in architecture.  Much like the traditional industrial uses of CAD files, the digital files represent tool paths directing the application of physical media.  The mix of precision and repetition that plotters embody turn traditionally analogue media into printmaking tools; pens once controlled only by hand can now draw identical lines over and over, brushes can apply paint in precisely the same location, anything that can be held in the tool clip can repeat its motions endlessly.

Artist + Printmaker Collaborations

I am currently pushing in the direction of expanding my skills with traditional print techniques to integrate with the plotted media. While conversing and learning from artists whose knowledge of other techniques will advance my own work, I hope to reciprocally support their own research into the capabilities of these machines in their own practice. I encourage any artists interested in the inclusion of these versatile machines into their practice to reach out, especially those located in the Bay Area, CA. The adoption of art machines into the vernacular can only expand the physical art world in positive ways during a time when digital media reigns supreme.
